Chocolate Starfish took the Australian music scene by storm in the early ’90s, making a bold entrance with their high-energy cover of Carly Simon’s “You’re So Vain”—the only cover they ever recorded. From there, they carved out their own legacy with chart-topping hits like Mountain, Four Letter Word, and Accidentally Cool.
Loud, brash, and unapologetically theatrical, Chocolate Starfish never played by the rules. Landing in the middle of the grunge era, they stood out with their vibrant, high-energy performances and a strict “no denim, no black T-shirts” rule. The band became known for their unmatched live shows, with frontman Adam Thompson bringing a level of showmanship that set them apart from the crowd.
At the peak of their success, Chocolate Starfish was one of Australia’s hardest-working bands, playing over 700 shows between 1993 and 1997, including an incredible 22-night run. Their self-titled debut album was the biggest-selling Australian debut of 1994, spending two months in the Top 10 and peaking at No.2, followed by 1995’s Box, which reached No.6.
Though the band never officially called it quits, their last show was in 1997. But now, the Starfish magic is back.

Whether it was climbing balconies, strapping cymbals to his wrists, or turning every gig into a full-scale spectacle, Adam Thompson and the band knew how to captivate an audience. As one critic put it, “If there’s an audience, he’ll play up to them, if there’s a balcony, he’ll climb it, if there’s energy in the room, he’ll milk it.”
Now, Chocolate Starfish is back on stage, reigniting the fire that made them one of Australia’s most unforgettable live acts.
